Yusupov Palace
The Yusupov Palace is one of the most luxurious in Saint Petersburg. You will admire the magnificent state and living rooms. Especially impressive is the Grand marble staircase, a luxurious dancing hall and a magnificent Moorish living room. The domestic theater of the Palace was famous for its special splendor and elegance. There is a rich collection of paintings, sculptures and other works of art in the palace.
One of the most mysterious pages in the history of Russia is connected with this Palace. In its basement in the night from 16 to 17 December 1916. Prince Felix Yusupov together with his accomplices, trying to save the honor of the throne, decided to kill the favorite of the Royal family Grigory Rasputin.
The owner of the house offered the guest wine and cakes poisoned with potassium cyanide, which for some unknown reason, did not work. Then Yusupov had to shoot Rasputin with a gun but the wounded old man managed to survive and get out of the basement into the street, where he was still shot. Then he was dumped and the corpse was thrown into the water from the Petrovsky bridge. However when it was dissected it was found that in there was water in lungs of Rasputin. This proved that when the king's favorite was drowned, he was still alive. Gradually the story of the murder overgrown with mystical and mysterious details and is still of great interest for the visitors.
