St.Isaac's cathedral
St. Isaac's Cathedral was built during 40 years (1819- 1858) by the talented French architect Auguste Montferrand with the help of modern technologies of that time. It was the main Cathedral of Russia. It is the forth higher domed structure in Europe. Around the drum of the dome there are 24 granite columns, each weighing 67 tons. For the first time in construction practice, columns of this size were raised to a height of more than 40 meters. Each of the 48 columns of the side porticos weighs 114 tons and is among the most gigantic in the world. The domes are covered with gilded copper sheets. Since the construction of the temple dome has never gilded. St. Isaac's Cathedral is faced with natural stone and decorated with sculptures. Today the Cathedral is one of the most popular places to visit.
Inside it looks like an elegant malachite box. An unprecedented number of types of stone were used in the construction and decoration. During the private tour you will find marble of different shades: yellow, pink, white, dark red, lemon. It was extracted all over Russia, and also bought from abroad.
42 varieties of minerals were used in its interior decoration: jasper, porphyry, lapis lazuli, malachite from France, Italy, Afghanistan. More than 400 kg of gold and more than a thousand tons of bronze was used. Every detail is made with amazing precision.
On the colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral there is an observation deck (height 43 meters), which offers a circular view of the historic center of St. Petersburg: the Central square of the city (St. Isaac's, Senate, Palace), the Neva river and the main bridges over it. The ascent to the colonnade is carried out by a stone spiral staircase.
