Peter & Paul fortress
Peter and Paul fortress is the first structure in the city founded by Peter the Great in 1703. It never participated in any battle and was never stormed by enemy.
Peter and Paul Cathedral, the first Church of St. Petersburg is unique historical and architectural monument of the XVIII century. It is the tomb of Russian emperors: Peter the Great, Catherine I, Anna Ioanovna, Elizabeth, Peter III, Catherine the Great, Paul I, Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II, Alexander III, Nicholas II.
Peter and Paul fortress has earned the glory of the "Russian Bastille". There was the most severe political prison in Russia. Prisoners of the fortress were: Prince Alexei, Biron, Princess Tarakanova, F. M. Dostoevsky, N. G.Chernyshevsky, the Decembrists (particitants of the first rebellion against monarchy), A. Ulyanov (brother of Lenin), M. Gorky, Trotsky, Grand Dukes and other famous historical figures.
